Course Title: Peer Support Basic Plus Training Program

Course Length: 3-day / 24-hours

Course Description:
This course is the same as the 2-day Peer Support Basic Training Program PLUS suicide prevention / intervention and compassionate presence during grief / loss

Suicide intervention training provides support team members knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to identify potential risk factors and utilize intervention techniques for anyone considering suicide.  The objective of this section is to teach peers to identify reactions and apply stabilization techniques effectively. This course provides the latest research concerning suicide risk and the latest numbers showing suicide on the rise. The course delves into various distortions of a person in pain and teaches peers reframing and reflecting techniques that generate connection and credible referral to next-level care.  This course also teaches students how to provide stabilizing support and compassionate presence for those overwhelmed by grief / loss.

Course Methodologies: Lecture, Demonstration, Scenario-based role play, Videos, Discussion, Group / table exercises (see training solutions for details)

  2. Provide emotional support that involves listening, exploring and validating
  3. Assess stress reactions and discover the “heart of the hurt”
  4. Address immediate needs and critical concerns with appropriate support strategies

  6. Demonstrate compassionate presence during difficult times of grief and loss
  7. Understand ethical principles and standards of peer practice

Evaluation of Learning: Pre-test / post-test, written exam and practical exercise (upon request)
